ΑΡΓΟΣ - The Town Hall
The modern town hall of Argos is a two-floor neoclassical building, which dominates the town’s central square. It is one of the most beautiful 19th century neoclassical buildings in Argos. The town hall was built in 1830, during the time that Ioannis Kapodistrias was governor of Greece. The two adjacent rectangular two-floor buildings are from the same period. The building is built from stone and has a simple hip roof of byzantine tiles, which is surrounded by a parapet. The morphological composition of the building is characterised by the baroque landing of the external steps, with its cast iron banister. The building originally housed the court and the Council of Elders of Argos, while the ground floor was even used as a jail. It was refurbished in 1889, when the two clay statues and decorative basins were added. It then became the town hall, while during the war it became the administrative centre of the occupying Italian forces. Following the last restoration in 1987 it has housed the council offices.
