ΑΡΓΟΣ - Kapodistrias Barracks
In 1824 the Greek government voted to establish the University of Argos and a large plot of land was purchased for this purpose. Later on, on the orders of Ioannis Kapodistrias, cavalry barracks were built here. The building complex is south of the town marketplace and was built on the foundations of Venetian buildings from 1687 and 1715. The buildings were also used to house the hospital of the Brothers of Mercy. The Ottomans turned the building into a covered market or ‘bezesteni’. Later the post office was housed here. These days, the building is home to the Municipal Philharmonic, the Municipal Theatre and the 1st Scout Troop. The area outside is used to hold cultural events, such as concerts and theatrical performances. The city’s new Byzantine Museum will be housed in the west wing.
