The modern cathedral is the successor to an older one, which was destroyed, and was not built in the same position.
The foundation stone was laid on 17th July 1859, in the presence of King Otto, who, in accordance with tradition, threw gold coins into the foundations. In order to fund the construction the Argives donated their threshing rights, sheep hides and whatever else they could.
Architecturally the church is a basilica with dome, and it has also been dedicated to Aghios Nikolaos and the Apostle Andreas.
On the 19th of January 2008, the people of the city received into this church the return of the relics of Aghios Petros, Archbishop of Argos and Wonderworker, which had been stolen in 1421 and taken to the Vatican.
