One of the oldest theatres in Greece was founded during the 5th century in Argos on the slopes of Larissa Hill. It was carved into the natural rock and has straight rows of seats divided into two by steps in the centre. It was used as a place for public meetings, in other words as a Chamber of Deputies, and it has also been connected to the Criterion or place of judgement.
According to mythology, it was here that King Danaos tried his daughter, Hypermnestra, the only one of his 50 daughters who disobeyed his order and did not kill her husband, Lynceus, who had come to Argos, along with his brothers, from Egypt in order to seize power.
The theatre with the straight rows of seats had a seating capacity of 2,500 and must have played host to theatrical performances as well, until the building of the large theatre during the 3rd century BC.
