ΑΡΓΟΣ - The Northern Arcade and the Theatre of the Agora
During the 4th century BC an arcade was established in the north section of the Agora. It lay on a south west-north east axis with its front to the south. This building, which obviously housed workshops, was destroyed by fire and was replaced in the 1st century AD by an imposing building (KR) which was for trade and crafts. More than likely in the 4th century BC, a construction in the shape of a horseshoe with a diameter of 28m (O) was built onto the arcade. The platform was named the Theatre of the Agora and consisted of two sets of limestone steps, which could seat up to 80 people. In the centre there was a dais with an altar which dates from 450 to 400 BC. It has been suggested that this site was used for public meetings and rituals. At the end of the 2nd century AD the horseshoe shaped construction was turned into a water tank.
