ΑΡΓΟΣ - The War Memorial
During the 4th century AD 8 second-hand limestone markers were placed around a flame (F) to the south west of the orchestra (O). One of these bears an inscription referring to the heroes who set out to fight against the Thebans during the reign of the Argive King Adrastos. It is possible that these markers in the 6th century BC originally formed an enclosure which would have delineated the war memorial for those fallen in the battle against Thebes (H). The memorial flame from later antiquity has been identified with the fire of Phoronius which burned near to the temple of Apollo Lykeios. The traveller Pausanias, who visited Argos during the 2nd century AD, describes the flame that the Argives kept alive in memory of the mythic founder of the city. According to legend, Phoronius was the first man on Earth. For the sake of his descendants he brought down fire from the heavens and taught man how to use it.
