ΑΡΓΟΣ - Monument M
To the north of the Agora’s race track is a square monumental pedestal measuring 6.20 by 6.20m, which dates from the time of the Roman emperors, in other words, from the 2nd century AD. Marble fragments which were found in the surrounding area, and came from its construction, are evidence of the luxurious nature of the monument which must have been used as a tomb or cenotaph. The privilege of being buried in a public place belonged to only a select group of society who during their lifetimes had honoured the city through their good or heroic deeds. The traveller Pausanias, who visited Argos during the 2nd century AD, lists many such tombstones or cenotaphs which decorated the ancient Agora. Unfortunately, no inscription or other evidence has survived to the present day which would reveal the identity of the famous Argive in whose memory this monument was constructed.
